COIMBATORE:  Reacting to the State government’s move to introduce UPI  payment facility, among others, in PDS shops, supervisors said the government should first replace outdated point of sale machines.

They saod the machines currently in use work on 2G cellular network, which is obsolete, and they cannot quickly connect with the server to update details of purchases made by beneficiaries. They added that despite repeated complaints to Civil Supply Department Officials, the issue has not been resolved.

“After registering Aadhaar based biometrics system through the point of sale machine,  commodities are distributed to customers. As POS machines were provided seven years ago, those are taking much time to access cardholders’ details.

Due to the delay in accessing the network, workers and cardholders face hardships and there are frequent quarrels,” said G Rajendran president of TN Fair Price Shop Employees Union. Welcoming the government’s announcement of facilitating payment options like G-Pay and Paytm, he urged the government to first address the POS issue.

Ravi, a worker in an PDS shop in Coimbatore said, “Due to issues in POS and network, we are often facing problems with our customers. Sometimes, it takes time for the process the server minimum of 7 - 10 minutes.”

When contacted, a senior official in Civil Supply Department, said, “Due to technical issues in the Aadhar portal, POS machines are not working sometimes. We have taken up the issue to the government’s knowledge already. It will be rectified soon.”
